Rigged up and ready
Situated in Aberdeen, the Energy Capital of Europe, PCL Group is ideally located to deal with local, national and international offshore clients.
With a reputation built on the provision of innovative IT solutions to oil and gas clients worldwide; we have worked extensively on drilling rigs, production platforms and FPSO vessels.
In-house engineers provide “turnkey” solutions in what is a challenging and competitive environment.
Our experience in this industry sector is varied and began with PCL Group engineers working on the Noble Ton Langeveld (TVL) at the Verolme Botlok yard in Rotterdam. This contract initially had a two week duration for the supply, installation, termination and commissioning of data cabling in specific locations of the semi-submersible mobile drilling rig. After successful completion of this workscope the operators then contracted PCL Group to supply, install and configure the network hardware to the requirement of the client extending the project lead time by a further two weeks for the variations to contract.
Shortly after the successful completion of the Noble TVL contract PCL Group then tendered and was successfully awarded the contract for the complete overhaul of structured cabling on the JW McLean at Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth by Transocean Limited. This detailed workscope was for the design, installation and commissioning of a 256 user network over three levels onboard the Zapata SS-33000 class semisubmersible, a propulsion assisted twin hulled sea barge catamaran with six stabilizing columns and a water tight working platform. The cabling installed was CAT5e with armoured core fibre cable being utilised to accommodate the harsh external working environment. This was a six week contract. Following on from the successful installation of this workscope PCL Group were then commissioned to project manage the installation of the ballast software system in the control room.
Of all the projects in the offshore sector the Schiehallion FPSO project has to be the toughest project our company has undertaken. With an initial lead time of 10 weeks, which was then adjusted to 6 weeks from start to finish, this project was challenging. The project detail was the building of a new 22 man accommodation module at Burntisland, Fife. All communication links both data and telephone to be installed into the cabins and all systems to be intrinsically safe. “IS” is a protection technique for safe operation of electronic equipment in explosive atmospheres and under irregular operating conditions. As a discipline, it is an application of inherent safety in instrumentation. This project involved great commitment in order to complete the tender within timescale. Long days and nights were encountered to meet the deadline for the collection of the module by Heerema Group to transport and position this new section onto the FPSO whilst out at sea.
Our CEO was instrumental in the design and installation of the above workscopes and worked alongside her engineers on site to ensure the projects were delivered to specification. In addition to this and to substantiate her commitment to Health and Safety whilst working in an offshore environment, she was on duty at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as a telephonist the night of the Piper Alpha disaster and dealt with the landing of the helicopters and enquiries coming into the hospital from all over the world. This is something she will never forget and sincerely hopes will never happen again.
